The problem of patient’s adaptation to orthodontic treatment

Keywords: adaptation, adaptation mechanism, adaptation factors, orthodontic treatment, orthodontic appliance

The article presents a literature review of the current scientific data on the problem of patients’ adaptation to orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic appliance, being a local irritant in the oral cavity, causes reflex changes in other organs and systems, primarily in the function of the CNS. Adaptation processes take place at three levels: biological, psychological and social. Biological adaptive changes in dentition under the influence of orthodontic appliances are well studied by many authors and are seen as changes in food reflexes, mastication and masticatory muscles tone, changes in quantitative and qualitative salivary composition, articulation disorder. In recent times the issues of psychological and social adaptation have become increasingly relevant. The importance of the patient's motivation, his relations with peers when wearing orthodontic appliances and relationship in the doctor-patient system is emphasized. Today, a dentist should be able to identify psychological and social factors that can influence the course of treatment in general and the adaptation process to orthodontic appliances in particular.
