The Use of Antidepressants in Different Population Groups

Keywords: antidepressants, family doctors, children, elderly people, countries of the world (Russia).

The review article discusses various issues on the use of antidepressant in Europe, the United States, Australia and Canada. Antidepressants are among the most prescribed medications, as depression is currently the leading cause of disability and incapacity for working in the population. The article describes features of antidepressant prescribing by general practitioners, to whom patients with depression turn first of all. Depression most often affects women, middle-aged people and the elderly (senile), they are also the main consumers of antidepressants. Children and adolescents are also prescribed antidepressants (fluoxetine, sertraline or citalopram, others are not recommended) in connection with depression, anxiety, suicidal behavior, other mental disorders. In Russia and Chuvashia antidepressants are not prescribed as often as in developed countries, which is associated with psychiatric help seeking only in extreme cases. Rare use of new generation antidepressants (first-line medications for depression) in patients with mental disorders in our country is due to economic reasons and their periodic absence in the pharmacy network.
