Morphofunctional changes of adrenal glands and thymus in rats after carcinogen N-methyl-N-nitrosourea administration

Keywords: adrenal, thymus, carcinogenesis, biogenic amines, luminescent granule cells, thymus accidental transformation

The aim of this work was to study the morphological and functional characteristics of adrenal glands and thymus of 22 white female rats when administered N-methyl-N-nitrosourea. Using luminescent-histochemical and general histological method revealed that the introduction of a carcinogen causes in the thymus, an increase in the number of luminescent granule cells, multidirectional changes in the level of biogenic amines, reduction in area and thickness of the cerebral cortex, which indicates the development of the thymus accidental transformation. In the adrenal glands there are an increase in the number of luminescent cells, a significant increase in the thickness of cortex, as well as changes in the content of biogenic amines. The interaction between the thymus and the adrenal glands is mediated by the cells of APUD series, which include granular luminescent cells able to secret biogenic amines.
